Ichika Recovery

They collected me. One of the Ardents had to actually pick me up and carry me to the jumper. “My pack,” I said.

“Don’t worry about it,” she told me. She was very sweet and gentle, settling me in to the front row of passenger seats. Then she crouched down, her eyes still higher than mine. She set her hand on my cheek. “Very well done, Ms. Mosley.”

I nodded.

“I have a message for you,” Jasmine said over my visor. “Congratulations, Precious. Will you let me hunt you again?”

“Tell her yes,” I said, fresh tears beginning.

“She needs to see to the women she caught,” Jasmine said. “She told me to take care of you. You and I will talk later.”

“All right.”

And then we were in the air.

The Ardent carried me to a wheelchair. I could have walked, but instead, I’d simply held my arms out to her, and she easily picked me up like a small child. “Thank you,” I whispered.

“We’ll take care of you, Ms. Mosley.” She wheeled me to the medical center where a small team of technicians saw to me. They took my visor and stripped my clothing from me.

It was Jasmine who picked me up and set me into the chair. She stood beside me as it closed around me, caressing my cheek with a tentacle tip. “You’ll be here overnight. We’ll make you sleep until morning.”

“I don’t want to be alone,” I whispered. “Can’t I have the visor back?”

“You’re going to sleep,” she replied. “Be a good girl, and I’ll let you have it back tomorrow.”

“I’m not a child.”

“Be a good girl,” she repeated.

“How could I possibly be a bad girl right about now?”

“I’m not entirely sure,” she said. She lowered her lips near my ear. “Trust me.” And so I nodded.

The chair closed over me, and I knew nothing more.

When I woke, the chair was partially open. There was a blanket over me, but I was still pinned in place. I opened my eyes. Jasmine was leaning over me, and on the other side, Muriel’s avatar.

They each took a hand, and then Jasmine caressed my cheek. “Good morning.”

“This looks like bad news.”

“Someone asked not to be alone,” she replied. “That’s all this is, a friendly face to wake up to.”

“Thank you. How long?”

“It’s just the next morning,” Jasmine replied. “The doctors have little to tell you. You’re still physically exhausted, but you’re otherwise healthy. Three days of rest and relaxation. No swimming today, and nothing exhausting until you feel one hundred percent again. Healthy food.”

“No pizza,” Muriel added.

“What about Faith?”

“Pretty much the same. She’s doing a little better than you, but pretty much identical orders. So I’m putting you both together with orders to watch over each other. Are you going to give me any trouble?”

“No.”

“Good. The restaurants will know what you should eat, so if you try to order pizza or French fries, they’ll probably substitute for you.”

“The restaurants here are amazing, and I would never ask for pizza from one of them, not when I can get something much better.
